Support people, angry people and you!

When you are trying to make changes in your life you need people around you that are supportive and encouraging.  Often those closest to us feel threatened by change and can be resistant to a new routine or foods.  If you are unwell and are making changes to improve your health this can be even more of a challenging time. Sometimes a clearing of the decks is required, where you may need to have less contact with those people who cause stress in your life, or if they try to download on you it may need to be said to them that you have a lot going on in your life at present and you just can’t talk to them at the moment, especially if they are angry.  I think a lot of angry people are unhappy with themselves rather than at you and as part of your wellness journey some tough decisions need to be made about who it is that really should be in your life. I am lucky that l have a very supportive husband, but he hasn’t always been that way. The dietary changes have been difficult for him to adjust to as for me it was a necessity, but for him he can still go out and eat takeaway or an ice-cream with no ill effects. Over time though he has come to see how my health has improved through using a food as medicine approach and is now on board, although he still eats a very different diet to me as do my children. I am slowly working away at them by presenting them with delicious meals that l can eat also.

The greatest challenges for me have come from people who we do not see every day and for whom there hasn’t been a clear understanding about what our wellness journey entails. Sometimes these people can place a lot of emotional stress on us without realising it and we have to decide whether it is worth trying to explain or just accepting that they are on a different path in life and move on. It can be very lonely living in a world where your life or health goals are different from most peoples, and when your food requirements are so limited it isn’t just a matter of saying l’m gluten free or l’m intolerant to this or that food as it is a philosophy about what goes into your body and how you want to live your life. Finding support people and like minded people is essential and l have listed some good books and internet resources on this website which is a good place to start. We are lucky that the internet has provided us with so many wonderful resources such as blogs, reference materials, on-line shopping and social networking. We don’t have to feel alone and if you surround yourself with people who really want to try and understand and who support you on your journey even if it is different to theirs, then you will have a good start.

Finally, believe in yourself and trust your instincts. You know your body better than anyone else and choosing the path to wellness is a good decision and one that is to be admired. Many people don’t know what it feels like to be well and how amazing life can be when your body is functioning the best it can. It will be hard work, require great planning and often some expense, but l think you are worth it.  That’s what l told myself and now l am reaping the benefits of feeling great and having a wonderful quality of life that just gets better every day.
