Most people l know are not into the Paleo diet and have a diet high in grains and processed foods. My approach to food and nutrition is based on wellness and healing and therefore my main focus is on myself and also trying to encourage my family to support me and change their eating habits for the better.
I do quite a lot of cooking for the school my children attend as an example which usually involves making cup cakes and similar baked goods. I tend to use regular ingredients for these dishes as l usually have to make bulk amounts and the better quality flours and ingredients are expensive and would not be appreciated in this instance. As l limit items such as processed sugar and flour from my pantry l find l am cooking less of these types of goods and am slowly substituting the better quality ingredients as it goes against my food philosophy to even be cooking with ingredients that l would not eat myself.
If l am making a cake for a special friend or family member then l will cook something that l can eat and this pleases me greatly. The delicious cakes that my children have grown up eating are slowly being transformed into a healthier version as it takes them time to get used to the new flavours and l have been learning how the new ingredients bake. A favourite of theirs is a chocolate cake and l have slowly substituted the ingredients for healthier alternatives including replacing the normal wheat flour with half Kamut and half buckwheat flour. I have tried to remove most grains from my children’s diet and in other instances use low or no gluten alternatives such as a spelt pasta or spelt/kamut bread.
As l follow a grain free diet l am learning new recipes and as my husband and children get used to the taste of these items l will make more of them and less of the foods they are used to. Changing the food and eating habits of other people can be difficult and the challenge is getting them to appreciate the reasons why a dietary change is required and helping them to understand why l choose to cook with and eat foods that are different from what most people consume. By spreading the wellness message l hope to make a difference to the people around me, but my main focus apart from myself is that of my husband and children who l live with. It is vital that l have their support and important to me that they share my wellness journey and understand how a food as nutrition approach can contribute to their total health and well being.
