The kitchen is a really busy place in my home. I do all of the grocery shopping and most of the food preparation and cooking. My three children are becoming more involved in the kitchen and hygiene is always on my mind as l do not want to get food poisoning which is very common and an awful illness to have. I put together a few tips for every day kitchen hygiene that can help reduce instances of food poisoning. It is a space that needs to be organised and kept really clean. I spend several hours everyday in the kitchen and am very aware of keeping all food surfaces clean and am really careful when reheating or storing foods. It is important to educate the whole family in kitchen hygiene and a good start is to focus on doing basic things such as washing your hands with soap and water before eating or preparing food.

It is important to educate the whole family in kitchen hygiene and a good start is to focus on doing basic things such as washing your hands with soap and water before eating or preparing food.

  • Have a separate chopping board for preparing raw meats. Wash with hot soapy water after use.
  • When cooking large quantities of food such as a soup or casserole, split into smaller portions when refrigerating or freezing to minimise bacteria growth.
  • Wash your hands with warm soapy water and dry before preparing food.
  • Thoroughly clean bench tops before cooking.
  • Cover food with a lid or cling wrap when stored in the fridge. If it has not been eaten after several days throw it out.
  • Place items such as raw chicken that is thawing in the fridge on the bottom shelf so it cannot leak onto other foods and contaminate them.
  • Keep eggs in the refrigerator until required.
  • When cooking with the slow cooker keep the lid on and turn the temperature to high to start with so the food can reach the desired temperature as quickly as possible. Avoid taking the lid off during cooking.
  • Clean up any spills in the kitchen when they happen to avoid bacteria growth.
  • Change the kitchen sponge regularly
  • Keep the pantry clean to avoid rodents and insects.
  • Clean the kitchen cupboards, shelves and floors to maintain a hygienic environment.
  • Have your hair tied up when cooking.
  • Discourage family members from tasting the food when it is being prepared ie putting their finger in the mixing bowl.
  • When purchasing fresh meats and package goods, observe use by dates.
  • Cook foods well and be careful when reheating foods to reheat properly.
  • Store at risk foods in the coldest part of the fridge.
  • Wash all utensils well after using them.
  • If you are unwell, such as if you have a cold, ensure you are very careful with hygiene or keep food preparation to a minimum until better.
